Self Reflect

When I began this series, I felt stuck creatively, and I felt like my relationship with my body needed more loving attention. Often, what I saw in pictures and mirrors did not reflect who I felt I was. It felt like I was seeing the body of some stranger, and I struggled to see any evidence of my heart. I was tired of looking at my body in shame, and getting caught in spirals of self-hate.

​Beginning on Summer Solstice, I began to take one self-portrait every week over the course of a year, in an attempt to repair that rift I felt. Photography seemed like the perfect medium for this exploration, as I've always considered it a tool of magical realism. It married the realness of my body but also allowed me to weave in the voice of my heart. This project was the inspiration for Incarnate.
